Tomatoes, cucumbers, chocolate bars, sandwiches, biscuits and grapes - that's what the fifth graders at Andersen Primary School found when they had a look into their lunch boxes on the first day of the project week. But where does our food actually come from? How does it end up on our plates and what does the process of getting there have to do with our climate? In our first project week on the topic of "Sustainable Food - in Germany and around the world", the pupils investigated these exciting questions.
With a puzzle, quizzes and varied input, the children not only learned about the path of tomatoes, bread and meat from the field to the plate, they also found out in which way the climate is harmed during the process - and of course how to do better with seasonal, local, low-meat and unpackaged food.
On day two, special guests awaited the students: Micheal Mwase, founder of the Rainbow House of Hope, and Francis Kyeyune had travelled all the way from Kampala, Uganda, to tell the Andersen children about their work, nutrition in Uganda and vegetable growing at the Rainbow House. And of course, a dance workshop with professional dancer Francis was not to be missed!
Another highlight of the week was an excursion to the ElisaBeet, a solidarity educational garden in the neighbourhood of the Andersen Primary School. Here, the pupils learned in a very practical way where cucumbers, tomatoes, sage and carrots grow, and were able to prepare a delicious meal from the fruits they had harvested themselves.
Finally, as in every project week, it was time to Take Action! Within two days, the children processed all they had learned in two self-drawn comics, a stop-motion film and a self-composed song.
When a new student joins the class, the three friends Ilknur, Maria and Taha are sceptical at first. Why does the new girl criticise the food that they are about to buy in the cafeteria?
The inhabitants of New York eat local and seasonal food and live peacefully in their city. But King Toxic wants to destroy the vegetables with his toxic fertiliser! Will Chili Man, the superhero, be able to stop him?
This song was produced by two pupils from Ukraine during our project week.
When Lena goes to the supermarket with her mother, she has a lot to criticise about the fruits in the trolley. Which fruit will remain in the trolley in the end?
"Eins, Zwei, Kartoffelbrei
Drei, Vier, iss kein Tier
Fünf, Sechs, gesunde Snacks
Sieben, Acht, sind schnell gemacht!"
(One, Two, mashed potatoes
Three, Four, don't eat animals
Five, Six, healthy snacks
Seven, Eight, are easy to make!)
