Project report

How does a tomato grow? How do bananas get to our supermarket? And what does the salami on my bread have to do with the climate? The children in class 4b at Andersen Grundschule (Andersen Primary School) got to the bottom of these and many more exciting questions during the project week "Sustainable food - in Germany and around the world!".

On the first day, they learnt how our food is actually produced with the help of a puzzle, nutrition bingo, exciting educational videos and a great deal of curiosity. The pupils quickly realised that a lot of things go wrong: long transport routes emit a lot of CO2, cows need a lot of feed that is planted in cut-down rainforest areas and a lot of our food is packaged in plastic. However, on the second day of the project week at the latest, the children were able to experience first-hand that there are better alternatives - that's when we visited the neighbouring ElisaBeet in Berlin-Wedding! Not only are regional vegetables grown here in an ecologically sustainable way, the children were also allowed to plant their own pizza garden and produce 100% climate-friendly herb salt themselves.

The programme continued on Wednesday with a broader perspective. The class was able to ask their peers from Nanziga Publiga Primary School in Kampala, Uganda, all their questions via video exchange. The Andersen children learnt that the Ugandan pupils even have their own vegetable patch where they grow bananas, beans, manioc and much more. And, of course, there was singing and dancing at the end.

On the last two days of the project week, it was time to take action! Working in groups, class 4b produced their own learning media in which they packed all the knowledge they had gathered during the project week. This resulted in a comic about transport routes, a song that encourages regional and seasonal nutrition, another comic about a vegetable patch and a stop-motion video about meat consumption. You can watch and listen to all the results here - enjoy!
