Project report

Another successful project week has come to an end at our long-standing partner school, Andersen Grundschule (Andersen Primary School). Class 5a explored the topic with a great deal of curiosity and energy: How does a tomato actually grow? How does our bread get to the supermarket? Do mangoes grow in Germany? And which vegetables can I plant on my balcony?

Following the motto ‘Sustainable food - here and around the world’, the pupils not only learnt how food is produced and delivered to us, they also discovered how plastic packaging, long transport routes, rainforest destruction and heated greenhouses cast a dark shadow over the sustainability of our food. The children then learnt at first hand how we can eat more sustainably, regionally and seasonally on a trip to ElisaBeet, a vegetable garden in Wedding.

Finally, we also focussed on global interconnections: in a photo quiz, the 5a pupils were able to find out what nutrition can look like in different parts of the world. As always, a special highlight was the digital exchange with one of our partner schools in Kampala, Uganda, the Nest of Joy Junior School. With particular curiosity, the children asked each other questions about favourite books, the climate and which fruit and vegetables grow in the garden in their respective regions.

As always, the motto for the last two days of this intensive week was: Take Action! In groups, the children developed their own comics, a stop motion film and their own song, in which they processed their newly acquired knowledge. You can download all the results here at the bottom of the page. With the accompanying worksheets, the learning media are also suitable for use in the classroom. Have fun reading, watching and listening!
