"We are looking for innovative contributions and clever ideas that deal with topics from the areas of environment, nature and climate protection."

With this call for entries, the Environment and Nature Conservation Office, the Education and Sports Office and the Youth Welfare Office of the Mitte district of Berlin invited entries for this year's Climate and Environment Award. Together with 19 other competitors, we handed in the results of our two project weeks ‘Climate change in Germany and around the world’, which we organised at Andersen Primary School in February and March. At the award ceremony, the pupils of classes 5a and 5c were delighted: we achieved first place in the ‘Best Initiative’ category! With the playful communication of important topics such as the climate crisis, combined with a creative and media-based problem-solving approach, the LHS Futureworks was able to convince the jury. The two classes can now look forward to receiving prize money totalling €400.

Project report

Two project weeks on the topic of "Climate Action - in Germany and around the world" took place this spring at Andersen Primary School (Andersen Grundschule) in Wedding. The two classes, 5a and 5c, first learned about the 17 Sustainable Development Goals: With the help of a collection of pictures and an SDG memory, the children soon knew most of the goals by heart and reflected on which problems in the world they would actually like to solve.

We continued with our input on questions relating to climate change and, of course, our popular game "Greenhouse effect in real life". During the first two days of the project week, the pupils not only learned the basics of what climate change is all about, they also exchanged ideas with a class from Nanziga Public Primary School and Mivule Parents Primary School in Kampala, Uganda. In the "World Distribution Game", the children also analysed how population, resources and CO2 emissions are distributed worldwide and thus developed a global perspective on the topic of climate change.

Finally, for the second half of the project week, it was time to Take Action! Using the apps Garage Band, Comic Life 3 and Stop Motion Studio Pro, the pupils in both classes worked in groups to create their own media on the topics of the climate worldwide, SDGs and sustainability. Class 5a created a comic about the effects of climate change at the North Pole, two songs entitled "MMA Klimarap" and "Prima Klima", another comic about three superheroes and a stop-motion film about sustainable travel. Class 5c also created two songs with catchy tunes, a comic about a climate monster, a stop-motion video about sustainable transport and a comic about the consequences of climate change in Uganda. Below you will find all the results with the corresponding worksheets available for download. Have fun listening, reading and learning!
