A whole week without lessons, but full of games, quizzes and lots of interesting facts about water: this sums up the project week at Ringelnatz Grundschule (Ringelnatz Primary School) for the pupils of class 5a. Not only did the children learn a lot about their own water consumption and water cycles here in Germany, but also developed a global perspective.
At the beginning of the project week, the pupils were introduced to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and especially Goal number 6 "Clean Water and Sanitation". With the help of an online tool, they even calculated their own water footprint!
Finally there was a particularly exciting moment: Via video, the children exchanged views with their peers from our partner project "Rainbow House of Hope" in Kampala, the capital of Uganda! They learned that there is a steadily increasing water shortage due to climate change. In addition, water resources and water consumption are unequally distributed worldwide: In Germany, much more water is consumed per capita than in Uganda.
The children also learned a lot about how access to water is different in for people worldwide. During the project week, they tested the game "Babu and Mirembe", in which they have to sell water in the streets of Kampala in the role of a Ugandan child in order to collect money for their school uniform. We even implemented this online game "in real life" in the classroom! You are also welcome to watch the video documentation of the project week.
We would especially like to thank our partners Explority e.V. and the Rainbow House of Hope, as well as Radijojo e.V. (publisher of the game "Babu and Mirembe"), without whom the project would not have been possible.
